Seed sorting

Just Food and its partners fight hunger in our community by increasing the availability of a variety of foods while reducing waste from discarded food. Just Food is looking for volunteers to assist in getting ready for next spring’s gardeners. Just Food is hosting a Seed Library Work Party at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont. Volunteers will sort seeds, prepare packets for stuffing and stuff packets with seeds. This is a great family-friendly or group volunteer opportunity. Volunteers may come and go as their schedules allow on Monday, Nov. 13, from 3 to 8 p.m. in Meeting Room C and Thursday, Nov. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Please contact Aundrea Shafer at programs@justfoodks.org for more information.

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help with the setup of Thanksgiving Food Boxes on Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon, and for distribution of the boxes on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Jim Evers at 785-764-0962 or at jim_evers@usc.

Big help for little ones

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a young boy or girl in our community? For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a “Little” the invaluable gift of your friendship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking a Big Brother for Kenneth. Kenneth loves playing outside and riding his bike. He likes to play basketball, soccer, tennis, and pingpong. He is very playful and loves making jokes. Kenneth hopes to find a big with a good sense of humor who he can talk to and play around with. If you have a few hours to be a volunteer, this is your opportunity to make a difference in the life of a youngster. For more information, please contact Mark Gordy at 785-843-7359.
