Area football roundup: Veritas, Perry-Lecompton lose in football playoffs

In the KCAA state semifinals, Veritas Christian’s football team lost to St. Mary’s Academy, 61-16, on Saturday at St. Mary’s.

The Eagles scored first when freshman Carter Shaw picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. But Veritas couldn’t create much offense for the remainder of the half and fell into a 31-point deficit. Veritas sophomore Will Eagleman added a 41-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery in the third quarter. Junior Aaron Evans led the Eagles with nine tackles while freshman Matthew Evans had seven tackles.

“I am so proud of the way our kids fought hard and left everything that they had out on the field today,” said Veritas coach Rick Evans, after his team ended the season with a 6-4 record. “We’re a young team with only one senior and nobody expected this team to accomplish everything that they have this season. Despite the outcome today, the future of Veritas football looks bright.”

St. Mary’s will play WAHAA in the KCAA state title game next week.
