Letter to the editor: Strong transit system

To the editor:

This morning on my way to work, I saw a yard sign urging “YES” on the ballot initiative to support public transit in Lawrence. Such support is especially important for the many Lawrencians who rely on the T-Lift. As the T-Lift website indicates, the service is a “vital lifeline” for individuals in our community who are unable to drive or use the fixed route system. It takes riders to doctors appointments, work, shopping, out to eat, anywhere in the city limits, and does so in a safe and timely manner. The system vastly enhances quality of life for individuals who need and use it. I use it to take a friend who lives in a nursing home to various appointments. The drivers are friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and timely. We are lucky to have such an affordable option for individuals who can no longer drive. The radio show “This American Life” recently featured a horror story about a similar service in New York City showing what can happen to a service that is not well funded or run. Like the sign says, a “YES” vote in support of public transportation in Lawrence will keep our transit system, including T-Lift, strong.
