Junge ties for 12th at state golf; Firebirds take 7th

Free State High senior Jack Junge carded a 75 and tied for 12th place at the Class 6A boys golf state tournament Monday at Auburn Hills in Wichita.

It was the best score at state for Junge, a four-time state qualifier. Junior teammate Tate Steele followed in 23rd place, shooting a 6-over-par 78.

Junge and Steele led the way for Free State’s boys golf team to tie for seventh in the team standings with 320 strokes. Blue Valley North won the team championship with a 294.

Free State freshman Andrew Park shot an 83, and sophomore Landon Berquist had an 84. Junior Will Cook and sophomore Dylan Sommer both carded an 86.

Lawrence High seniors Cole Brungardt, Garrett Wildeman and Thomas Taber all qualified for state as individuals.

Brungardt and Wildeman shot an identical 79, tying for 31st place. Taber shot a 95.

Garden City sophomore Sion Audrain won the individual title with a 2-under 70, winning in a playoff.
