2017 Boys Athletic All-Star finalists
Zion Bowlin, Free State
A strong hitter in the middle of the Firebirds’ batting order, Bowlin ranks among the team’s leaders in batting average, runs and RBIs. The senior third baseman, who was a two-way starter in football, was an all-state selection last year and has only improved. Bowlin led the Firebirds to back-to-back Class 6A state championship game appearances.
Jay Dineen, Free State
One of the top linebackers in the state, Dineen recorded a school-record 80 unassisted tackles last season. Signed to play football at Kansas, he was an all-state selection after leading the Firebirds to a 9-3 record. In basketball, Dineen averaged 7.7 points and a team-high 3.5 assists. He led the Firebirds to Sunflower League titles in football and basketball.
Levi Green, Baldwin
A two-time Frontier League champion, Green ended his senior season with a 47-5 record and finished eighth on the school’s all-time wins list with 131 victories. Green took third place at 138 pounds at the Class 4A state tournament, the second time he medaled in his four-year career. Green, who won two tournaments during the regular season, has signed to wrestle at Baker.
LeeRoi Johnson, Tonganoxie
Johnson ranks among the state’s leaders in the discus after a personal-record 176 foot, 2 inch toss. His best throw put him around the top 100 in the nation. The 6-foot-2 junior placed fifth in the discus at the Class 4A state meet last season.
Jackson Mallory, Lawrence
Leading the Lions’ basketball team to the Class 6A Final Four for the third straight season, Mallory earned first-team all-Sunflower League honors after averaging 10.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Mallory, a 6-foot-3 guard committed to play at Ottawa, helped LHS to the state championship game in two of the last three years.
Jordan Portela, Free State
One of the top swimmers in state history, Portela won state titles in 11 events throughout his four-year career. Portela owns seven of his school’s 11 swimming records, including a state record time in the 100-yard butterfly. Portela has signed to swim at Minnesota.
Zack Sanders, Free State
Sanders set single-season football records in receptions (67), receiving yards (1,065) and interceptions (five). The receiver and defensive back scored a team-best 17 touchdowns, including three punts and two interceptions that he returned to the end zone. Sanders will play football at Missouri State.
Cain Scott, Lawrence
A second-team, all-state selection, Scott scored 17 goals in 18 games. He led the Lions to a 9-8-1 record and their first regional soccer victory since 2012. Signed to play at Ottawa, the dynamic forward scored 16 of his goals throughout the regular season, tying Lawrence’s modern-era school record.
Tate Steele, Free State
Steele took fourth place at the Class 6A state wrestling tournament at 138 pounds. He was runner-up at regional, won four regular season tournaments and completed the year with a 30-3 record. The junior helped the Firebirds post an undefeated record in duals.
