Drum scores another hat trick, Lions crush SMN

Lawrence High senior Skylar Drum (18) protects the ball from Shawnee Mission North's Madison Koller (13) on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at LHS.

For the second time in as many nights, Lawrence High senior Skylar Drum recorded a hat trick.

Drum’s trio of goals were more than enough to lift Lawrence’s girls soccer team past Shawnee Mission North, 5-0, at LHS on Tuesday. In her last regular season game at home, Drum scored the game’s opening goal, in addition to a pair of scores in the final five minutes. Drum has now accounted for six of Lawrence’s 10 goals over the last two nights.

“She’s got six goals in the past two days and every single on of them has been good,” coach Matt McCune said. “She’s a stud. She’s obviously all-league and she’s going to get all-league again. She’s such a good player.”

But it wasn’t just Drum’s doing. The Indians had no answer for the speed of the Lions’ forwards, including sophomores Sofie Christiansen and Evann Seratte. The three of them were able to get open upfield with ease and contributed to the team’s 23 shot attempts.

Still, that speed didn’t translate into goals until the 29th minute when Lawrence (6-9) finally got on the board via a penalty kick by Drum.

Prior to the kick, McCune noticed that SM North’s goalkeeper, Chanelle Boldridge, was struggling to spot the soccer ball from the net as the sun beamed directly in her eyes. Boldridge stood shielding the sun with her right hand, as Drum lofted the kick up in the air. The ball soared past Boldridge’s waving arms to give LHS a 1-0 advantage.

“I could tell the goalie was looking into the sun, so I said just put it on frame,” McCune said. “She drilled it and you could tell the keeper reacted way too late, because of the sun. That was a good shot.”

Following a save by Olivia Lemus less than a minute later, Carson Drake netted the team’s second goal on a strike from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Even with a two-score lead at the break, McCune knew his team was capable of much more. He encouraged his team to be more physical and take advantage of the opposition for overcommitting in the passing lanes. He stressed the importance of his defense setting up the offense.

The Lions answered with three scores in the final 12 minutes of action. Junior Maria Duncan capitalized on a fast break opportunity to take a 3-0 advantage. Meanwhile, Drum posted back-to-back goals in the 77th minute.

LHS has now won five of its last six matches and appear to be on track since opening the year with an 0-7 record. McCune alluded his squad’s early season struggles to a combination of things, including a front-heavy schedule and the fact multiple players were on the basketball team.

“We told the girls to trust us and trust the process and trust each other,” McCune said. “Because you want to be better at the end of the season than you are at the beginning.”

Lawrence will travel to Topeka at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
