Miscues cost Lions in 11-10 loss to SMS

On a difficult night to play because of the cold weather, Lawrence High’s baseball players didn’t make it any easier on themselves in an 11-10 loss against Shawnee Mission South.

Playing in their first Sunflower League game Thursday, the Lions recorded four errors. They issued six walks. Simply, too many miscues despite scoring 10 runs.

The Lions, visitors at their home ballpark because weather moved the game to Lawrence’s turf field, watched SM South’s Griffin Larsen hit a two-out triple down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then Larsen scored on a throwing error for the game-winning run.

SM South players sprinted out of their dugout, celebrating down the first-base line as the Lions stood in silence.

“We’ve just got to get out of our own way,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “That’s the bottom line. If we can just get out of our own way, we’ll be all right. You figure you score 10 runs, you should win a game in the Sunflower League.”

The Lions (0-3) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by three walks, an error, an RBI triple from Devin Lauts and a run-scoring infield single from Alexander Guy.

Lawrence added three more runs in the second inning after senior Braden Solko hit a RBI single into left field. Solko and junior Austin Quick both scored on wild pitches.

But the Raiders (2-2) continued to chip at their deficit, scoring at least two runs in each of the first four innings.

“There’s been several innings in these first three losses where we’re giving teams, four, five, sometimes even six outs in an inning,” Stoll said. “That’s just unacceptable. It starts with me. We’ve just got to clean up and play better defense.”

Once the two schools were tied, 10-10, following the fourth inning, all of the offense suddenly disappeared.

The Lions opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles from junior Andrew Stewart and Lauts, but couldn’t find a timely hit for a go-ahead run.

Lauts went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

“I think offensively, we’ll be just fine,” Stoll said. “There were some really good things that happened tonight. Obviously I wish we would’ve had a few more positive at-bats with runners in scoring position.”

Solko, in his first pitching appearance of the season, only allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings, striking out one. He hit his spots with his fastball, forcing several ground balls until Larsen’s triple in the seventh inning, which rolled near the warning track.

“He came out and gave us a chance to win tonight,” Stoll said of Solko. “Hats off to him, man. I’m really proud of what he’s doing for us. He’s competing — you saw it on the basketball court with that kid. He’s really grown up and is a tough, competitive kid.”
