Stafford named Sunflower League’s top player, Stroh and Dickson earn coaching honors

Lawrence High junior E’lease Stafford was named the Sunflower League’s girls basketball co-Player of the Year, while LHS girls basketball coach Jeff Dickson and Free State boys basketball coach Sam Stroh earned the league’s coaches of the year honors, announced Sunday.

Stafford, who recovered from a torn ligament in her knee during the offseason, averaged 13 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Along with Stafford, Free State senior Madison Piper earned first-team all-league honors. Piper missed the team’s final eight games because of a broken ankle.

Lawrence’s Chisom Ajekwu and Free State’s Jaelyn Two Hearts were picked third team all-league, while Cameryn Thomas (FSHS), Olivia Lemus (LHS), Skylar Drum (LHS) and Hannah Stewart (LHS) received an honorable mention.

For the boys, Lawrence senior Jackson Mallory and Free State junior Garrett Luinstra earned first-team all-league honors.

LHS senior Kobe Buffalomeat was selected on the second team, while sophomore Clarence King and FSHS seniors Jay Dineen and Cameron Clark, were picked for the third team. King was named the league’s sophomore of the year.

Brett Chapple (LHS) and Shannon Cordes (FSHS) were given honorable mention recognition.

Dickson led the LHS girls basketball team to an 18-5 record and their first state tournament appearance since 2008. Stroh coached the Firebirds to third place at state, winning the program’s first league title since 2005.
