Jimenez named league’s top bowler

Free State senior Alex Jimenez was named the Sunflower League’s boys bowler of the year, while Free State coach Burton Gepford and Lawrence High coach Paula Bastemeyer earned coach of the year honors, announced Wednesday.

It’s the second time Jimenez, who led the Firebirds to a league title, was selected as the league’s top bowler in his career. He placed fifth at the Class 6A state meet and finished the season averaging a 704 three-game series.

Lawrence High junior Holly Evans was named first-team all-league for the girls. Lawrence’s Morgan Daniels and Diamonique Vann were second-team selections, along with Free State junior Morgan Wright. For the boys, Free State’s Cameron Edens was picked second-team all-league.

Free State’s Sydney Jordan and Nicole Miele, along with Lawrence’s Hannah Reed and Carli Stellwagon were honorable mention recipients. On the boys’ side, Free State’s Zach Lockwood and Lawrence’s Adonis Stanwix and Noah Geopfert received an honorable mention.

Bastemeyer was named the girls coach of the year, while Gepford split boys coach of the year honors with SM South’s Kent Thompson.
