State basketball tournament field set for LHS, FSHS, Seabury

Back in the Class 6A state tournament for the first time since 2013, Free State’s boys basketball team earned the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Wichita South (16-6) in the first round at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Wichita State’s Koch Arena.

Lawrence High’s boys basketball team is the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 Manhattan (18-4) at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Firebirds (16-6) and Lions (15-7) are on opposite sides of the bracket and would only meet in the state championship.

With a win in the first round, Free State will play top-seeded Blue Valley Northwest (19-3) or eighth-seeded Garden City (11-11) in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. Friday.

The Lawrence-Manhattan winner will play No. 3 Olathe Northwest (17-5) or No. 6 Blue Valley North (16-6) at 4:45 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

In the 6A girls bracket, Lawrence’s girls basketball team (18-4) was seeded sixth and will open against No. 3 Olathe South (18-4) in the first round at 4:45 p.m. Thursday. The Lions lost, 54-38, versus O-South on Jan. 6.

With a win, the LHS girls would face No. 2 Manhattan (21-1) or No. 7 Olathe Northwest (15-7) at 3 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

In 2A, Bishop Seabury’s boys basketball team (18-4) returns to state as the No. 6 seed, facing No. 3 Ness City (21-2) in the first round at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at Kansas State’s Bramlage Coliseum.

The Seabury-Ness City winner will face St. John (22-1) or St. Mary’s Colgan (17-5) in the semifinals at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
