Baldwin girls slip against Miege in sub-state title game

? When the final seconds were running off of the clock Saturday, Baldwin High senior Taylor Cawley and junior Abby Ogle embraced in a hug with tears in their eyes.

Baldwin’s girls basketball season came to an end with a 59-42 loss against Bishop Miege in the sub-state championship at Bonner Springs YMCA, denying the Bulldogs their third straight trip to the Class 4A-I state tournament.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs were held to just four points, scoring on layups from sophomores Kayla Kurtz and Kate Ogle.

That helped Miege finish the period with a double-digit lead and the Bulldogs didn’t have enough time to recover.

“We came out at the start of the (third) quarter and had a lot of really good looks that didn’t get anything to go,” Baldwin coach Bob Martin said. “I think that was a big part of it. Had we got something going there, I think the momentum we had gotten in the second quarter would’ve came through.”

After trailing by as many as 17 points in the first quarter, the Bulldogs (19-3) cut their deficit to four points at halftime.

During the last four minutes of the second quarter, Baldwin went on a 12-3 run — highlighted by four points from junior Abby Ogle (team-high 20 points, seven rebounds) and 3-pointers from Cawley and junior McKinley Markley.

Sophomore Carly Lindenmeyer finished with six points and senior Riley O’Rourke had eight rebounds.

“I was really proud of the way our girls responded,” Martin said. “We kind of got punched in the mouth, then we got back up and fought back in it.”

Miege (19-3) was led by senior Hunter Bentley, who scored a game-high 23 points.

“Nothing to be ashamed of tonight,” Martin said. “We got beat by a good team. We had a great season. We need to remember that.”
