Letter to the editor: Pressure Jenkins

To the editor:

Despite bipartisan support for him to do so, Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns.

Recently Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-New Jersey, a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, discovered that under a 1924 law, members of the committee can privately examine the president’s tax returns to determine if there are conflicts of interest or constitutional violations.

Pascrell introduced a measure to request this, but 23 Republican members of the committee voted no, thwarting this attempt at transparency. Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas was one of the Republicans who voted no.

I vote in Wichita, Kansas 4th Congressional District (currently unrepresented in the House, pending a special election on April 11 to fill Mike Pompeo’s seat). I respectfully ask readers of the Journal-World, who are Jenkins’ constituents in the 2nd District, to contact her and express concerns about her vote. As Kansans, we can help each other tell the GOP they have gone a bit too far.

Thank you.
