Venters places 7th in national race

Former Free State runner Emily Venters placed seventh in the girls 2-mile race at the Brooks PR Invitational on Saturday in Seattle.

The Brooks meet gathers some of the fastest high school runners across the country. Venters and Olpe’s Kyler True were the only runners from Kansas entered.

Venters, signed to run at Boise State, finished in a personal-best time of 10:19.31. She won Class 6A state titles in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races last month.

Brie Oakley, of Centennial, Colo., won the girls 2-mile in a meet-record 9:51.35, the second-fastest time by a prep runner in U.S. history.
