On a big recruiting weekend for the Kansas football program, third-year head coach David Beaty and his staff saw three hefty additions to their 2018 class.

Thrice Sunday afternoon Beaty tweeted out his signature “neat deal” hashtag, signaling commitments from a trio of defensive linemen: high school senior defensive end Josh Smith and junior college defensive tackles Jonathan Lolohea and Charles Cameron.

Smith, rated a three-star prospect by Rivals, became the third player from Landry-Walker High, in New Orleans, to verbally commit to Kansas, joining the highest-rated players on Beaty’s list, five-star receiver Devonta Jason and four-star cornerback Corione Harris. All of them, of course, play for the same prep program that produced rising KU sophomore safety Mike Lee.

Smith, the fifth Kansas commit from associate head coach Tony Hull’s home state of Louisiana, is listed at 6-foot-4 and 247 pounds. Smith reportedly also had offers from Houston, Iowa State and other programs. Ahead of his junior season, Smith had committed to Missouri.

Lolohea and Cameron both will play this fall for Copiah-Lincoln Community College, in Wesson, Miss. Rivals ranks Lolohea, a 6-3, 305-pound tackle, as a three-star juco prospect, while Cameron, at 6-3, 290, is considered a two-star talent.

The duo visited Kansas together this weekend, and told Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant they had previously discussed joining forces for the Jayhawks before committing to Beaty on the same day.

“It feels good to be committing with one of my best friends and knowing he will go to school with me,” Cameron told Jayhawk Slant.

According to Rivals, Lolohea also has offers from Arizona, Colorado, Kansas State, Louisville, TCU and many other programs. Cameron, too, picked up offers from Colorado, Louisville and a variety of other teams.

KU now has verbal commitments from 13 players, months ahead of 2018 National Signing Day, when prospects make their college plans official.

As of Sunday, Rivals ranked the Kansas class as 12th-best in the nation.
