Firebirds looking to incorporate new players throughout offseason

When Free State’s boys basketball team met for team camp earlier this week, the biggest task was learning to how play alongside each other.

After winning a Sunflower League title and placing third at the Class 6A state tournament, the Firebirds are hoping they can build on their success.

Playing at the MNU camp last weekend, the Firebirds brought three teams — one varsity and two junior-varsity squads — and walked away with a 12-1 record.

“I love seeing my friends out here and we love competing,” senior guard Garrett Luinstra said. “We’ve got some new guys and I’m excited to see what we can do.”

The Firebirds have added a talented group of move-in transfers, which includes Zach McDermott (from Bishop Seabury), Bansi King (Seabury), Reece White (Topeka) and Noah Butler (Lawrence High), among others. All three of them were in the varsity rotation at their previous schools.

Free State is competing in the KAMO Shootout this weekend. After that, the team will head to University of Kansas and Denver University team camps throughout the remainder of the month.

“They obviously can play and they won’t be afraid of the bright lights,” Free State coach Sam Stroh said of the transfers. “The biggest thing is getting accustomed to playing with each other, learning our culture, learning our system. They’ve done a good job so far this summer.”

At Free State’s team camp, which concluded Thursday, players were happy with the level of play on the court.

Luinstra, who returns from last year’s varsity rotation along with senior forward Jalan Robinson and senior guard Simon McCaffrey, said he treated the camp like practices because it’s similar drills. That included several 5-on-5 match-ups between players.

“I think we’ll have to change our game a little bit with some of the new people we added, but I think it’ll be good,” Robinson said.

Beyond the group of transfers, the Firebirds are excited about the progress from former junior-varsity players. Robinson noted sophomore Ethan Lincoln played well at the team camp.

“Once we get everyone together and be on the same page, we should play pretty well hopefully,” Stroh said.

Despite the recent success and high expectations for the upcoming year, the Firebirds are treating the offseason like they have in previous summers.

“Our expectations aren’t going to change based on our results hopefully,” said Stroh, who is entering his third year at the head of the program. “We want to keep pushing the envelope, getting to where we can go and playing to our potential. I see the same intensity in Day One of camp today as Day One of camp two years ago. That’s what we expect.”

Preparing for the upcoming season, the Firebirds believe they will stack up well against teams across the state, but don’t want to take last year’s success for granted.

“We have high expectations but we can’t expect to just easily win,” Luinstra said. “We still have to work hard and be humble about it.”
