Two years after leaving his job at Kansas to advance in the coaching ranks, former KU point guard Aaron Miles is poised to become a head coach.

According to a report from 2 Ways & 10 Days, which extensively covers the NBA’s developmental league, Miles soon will be named the head coach of the Golden State Warriors’ G League affiliate the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Miles, who spent the bulk of his professional playing career in Europe, began his life after college basketball as an undrafted addition by Golden State. He was cut before his contract became fully guaranteed and actually spent time playing in the G League (formerly the D League), with former Kansas teammate Keith Langford in Fort Worth, Texas.

Following his playing career, Miles returned to KU, where he spent the 2015-16 season working as KU’s assistant director of student-athlete development before moving into a full-time assistant coaching position under former KU assistant Joe Dooley at Florida Gulf Coast.

Several Kansas players, including reigning national player of the year Frank Mason III, said Miles’ presence around the program was critical to their development, both as players and in helping them comprehend the culture of Kansas basketball under KU coach Bill Self.

The Portland native who remains the all-time assists leader in both KU and Big 12 history helped lead FGCU to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth last season during a 26-8 season.

According to the report, Miles, who will become the third coach in Santa Cruz history, will replace Casey Hill, who served as the Santa Cruz Warriors head coach for four seasons. Hill won a G League championship with the Warriors during the 2014-15 season.
