Seabury boys run past KC East in 2nd half; Seabury girls fall

The ball wasn’t moving, the defensive intensity wasn’t there and the Bishop Seabury boys basketball team showed signs of frustration as Kansas City (Kan.) East shot its way to a one-point halftime lead.

All of that changed in the third quarter.

With disruptive defense and ball movement, Bishop Seabury exploded for a 27-point third quarter on its way to an 80-66 home win over Kansas City East (9-14) Friday night.

“There’s nothing (you can do),” senior Mikey Wycoff said. “We can’t be stopped at all.”

Wycoff led the Seahawks with 29 points while juniors Zach McDermott and Bansi King each scored 20.

“You have to pick your poison with us,” coach Ashley Battles said. “They wanted to shut Mikey (Wycoff) down, you could see it. That just opens everything up for Bansi (King) and Zach (McDermott).”

In the second quarter, it looked like Seabury (11-2, ranked No. 3 in class 2A) was on the verge of blowing the game open. The Seahawks led 30-22, but the Lions got comfortable against their zone defense and rattled off 10 straight points to take a one-point lead into halftime.

The Seahawks had another gear in the third quarter and that proved to be too much for the Lions.

King rattled off 12 quick points, and the Seahawks were finally able to get out in transition. As a result, they rattled off a 15-3 run to end the quarter and put the game out of reach.

“We talked (on defense), got steals, and got out and ran,” Wycoff said. “That’s how we play.”

Even though coach Nick Taylor was disappointed in the final score, he was pleased with the effort his Bishop Seabury girls basketball team showed in a 70-41 home loss to Kansas City East (13-7) on Friday night.

“I see progress, and I appreciate the effort they’re giving me,” Taylor said. “From day one we’ve come a long ways. I think we’re getting better every day.”

After going scoreless in the first six minutes, the Seahawks (1-10) trailed the entire game. But they hung around, and were even able to trim the Lions’ lead to 42-26 midway through the third quarter.

“Our effort and heart was definitely increased this game,” senior Celia Taylor-Puckett said.

The Seahawks shot just 37 percent from the field, but they made 19-of-29 free throws to stay competitive. Taylor said his team hasn’t shown that sort of aggressiveness in driving to the basket all season.

Senior Kayleigh Boos and Taylor-Puckett scored 20 and 16 points, respectively, and attempted a combined 25 free throws.

“I have the support of my team, my coach, and my school, so that really helped,” Boos said. “I sometimes struggle with that (confidence.)”

However, Taylor said the Lions’ ability to create turnovers and rebound proved to be too much for the Seahawks.
