Quarterback Ryan Willis informs head coach David Beaty of intention to transfer

Kansas quarterback Ryan Willis (13) is brought down by TCU defensive tackle Aaron Curry (95) and other Horned Frog defenders on the Jayhawks' final drive of the game on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 at Memorial Stadium.

Kansas sophomore quarterback Ryan Willis informed football coach David Beaty of his intention to transfer during a phone call Wednesday night, according to a source familiar with Willis’ decision.

Willis plans to resume his academic and football career at Virginia Tech, multiple sources said.

Willis later confirmed the news via a message on Twitter.

The move does not come as a surprise because Carter Stanley earned the starting job in the final three weeks of the 2016 season and junior-college transfer Peyton Bender was recruited to compete with Stanley for the starting job this coming spring.

A graduate of Bishop Miege High, Willis appeared in 16 games at quarterback at Kansas and completed 236 of 432 passes for 2,530 yards. He threw 11 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions, sharing time for most of his career with fellow Miege graduate Montell Cozart.

Willis was the only of 10 quarterbacks to start a game after Todd Reesing exhausted his eligibility to throw for 300 yards more than once. As a freshman, Willis threw for 330 yards in a 30-20 loss to Texas Tech. He threw for 348 yards in a 24-23 loss to TCU as a sophomore.

Avoiding sacks became a problem for Willis and he was relegated to third string. He did not appear in any games over the final six games of the season.

Behind Bender and Carter, Kansas has Cozart, a senior, red-shirt freshman Tyriek Starks, and Deondre Ford at quarterback.
