Seabury girls fall to Pembroke Hill

Back on the court for the first time in nearly a month, it took more than seven minutes for Bishop Seabury’s girls basketball team to make its first shot Wednesday.

Playing against Pembroke Hill’s active zone defense, the Seahawks never found it much easier to score or find a rhythm in a 53-20 loss at Seabury. There was a running clock throughout the fourth quarter.

Seabury senior forward Kayleigh Boos scored 15 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the contest.

“I told the girls after the game,” Seabury coach Nick Taylor said, “that’s on me. I’ve got to get these girls reppin’ our offense to where when we step into a game-like situation, we’ve got to be able to run our offense.”

The 5-foot-11 Boos earned a couple of trips to the free-throw line and muscled her way inside of the paint for a few layups.

But there was no chance for the Seahawks (1-3) to pick up much momentum. During the first three quarters, each and every time Seabury scored, the Raiders scored on the next possession.

After Seabury held Pembroke Hill to only two points in the first six minutes, the Raiders went on 16-2 run over the last 5:25 of the first half for a 24-point halftime advantage. Sophomore guard Carrie Hughes led with 14 points.

“Against a team like that, you can’t just throw the ball around and expect to score without running a solid offense,” Taylor said. “They were pretty good defensively. They held us out of the lane pretty good. They had some pretty good athletes who could move their feet.”

Seabury freshman Emily Heinz added five points.
