LHS boys lose in OT to SM East

PRAIRIE VILLAGE — For Lawrence High’s boys basketball players, Tuesday’s 62-56 road loss in overtime to Shawnee Mission East looked too familiar.

The Lions certainly had their opportunities, holding onto a five-point advantage for much of the fourth quarter.

But they didn’t help themselves, shooting 0-for-5 in the final period with three turnovers and a couple of missed free throws.

Sophomore Noah Butler gave the Lions a 48-43 lead with 2:20 remaining following two made free throws. Afterward, Lawrence only scored one point over its final four possessions — including a missed jumper from senior Jackson Mallory before the buzzer, where he pump-faked two defenders for an open look.

It’s the team’s second overtime loss in the last 11 days — both times holding a lead in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t regret much, the opportunities were there,” LHS coach Mike Lewis said. “You’ve got to be able to score the ball and get a couple of other stops.”

In overtime, the Lancers (12-7, 7-3 in Sunflower League) took a four-point lead in the first minute and never trailed again.

The Lions shot 23 percent throughout the contest, including a 2-for-15 clip in overtime. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, grabbing numerous offensive rebounds and driving to the rim, but shots just refused to fall.

Each time the Lions tried to cut their overtime deficit to within three points, they missed a few shots and the Lancers would sink free throws. SM East senior guard Trevor Thompson scored a game-high 23 points.

“It’s pretty frustrating,” said sophomore Clarence King, who had 17 points and eight rebounds. “We’ve got to pull it out when we were up ahead. We can’t let them get in our head. We just have to keep playing — play how we play.”

In the first half, the Lions found most of their offense through Butler. The 6-foot-5 wing scored the team’s final eight points in the first quarter, converting a layup-and-the-foul bucket and creating space for a 3-pointer on the perimeter on back-to-back possessions.

Butler finished with a team-high 19 points, filling the offensive spotlight when a couple of starters went to the bench because of foul trouble. He credited his coaches and teammates for telling him to keep looking for offensive opportunities.

LHS sophomore forward Brett Chapple added nine points and 13 rebounds.

“We’ve just got to finish and stay close as a team, pick each other up when it’s not going our way,” Butler said. “I think we need to do a better job of that, but we’re getting there.”
