Firebirds rout SM West, 52-33

OVERLAND PARK — Free State girls basketball coach Ted Juneau was much more pleased with the way his team played in just about every facet of the game Tuesday.

Just days after a disappointing loss on Senior Night, the Firebirds bounced back with a convincing 52-33 road victory at Shawnee Mission West. Three different players scored at least nine points, while FSHS held its opposition to a 10-of-44 effort from the floor.

“After Friday night, this was good,” Juneau said. “(Shawnee Mission) West was on a roll. They got Kenzie (Loe) back and so I was concerned. We were a lot more solid in the second half. The kids recognized what we needed to do.”

The Firebirds (12-7, 6-4 in Sunflower League) were tested on the interior with the Vikings’ senior center Kenzie Loe, a 6-foot-2 Washburn University signee. She was the game-high scorer with 15 points on 40 percent shooting, including a 7-of-8 mark from the free throw line.

Still, FSHS disrupted her with its matchup zone defense. Junior Cameryn Thomas was able to front her and stole the ball multiple times when SM West tried to enter it in the post – something she did much more of towards the end of the night. Loe, who scored 14 points through the first three periods, was held to one in the final quarter.

In fact, her free throw at the 5:06 mark was the only time SM West (7-12, 3-7) got on the scoreboard in the final period after trailing, 36-32, at the end of the third quarter.

“I thought it was a great team effort on the defensive end,” Juneau said. “We played with more confidence. I was just real pleased with everyone’s effort.”

Meanwhile, the Firebirds were able to close out the final eight minutes with 16 points, marking the second straight quarter the team hit that point total. The team only failed to score double-digits in the second quarter.

Freshman Caely Kesten led the way with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, including a 3-for-4 clip in the opening quarter. Junior Sam Lawrence added 11 points, hitting three of her six shots, all of which were from downtown. Thomas recorded nine points and junior Jaelyn Two Hearts notched eight points on six shots.

Free State will travel to Lawrence High for the City Showdown at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

“Rumor is we got a game on Friday, I’m not sure who we will have to play,” Juneau said jokingly.
