LHS girls, FSHS boys win league bowling titles

? When Lawrence High junior Diamonique Vann started bowling at the Sunflower League Tournament on Friday, she thought it was going to be a long day.

It wasn’t a bad first game; just slightly below her season average. Listening to her coaches, Vann moved forward and just a little bit to the left.

Afterward, it was magic.

Vann was the top bowler by nearly 100 pins, leading Lawrence’s girls bowling team to its second team title in school history. She finished with a 663 series at Park Lanes, her highest score of the season by 25.

Free State’s boys bowling team followed with its own league championship. Both teams won in 2015.

“It’s amazing. I’ve never won a title like that,” said Vann, who rolled games of 235 and 257. “I’m so happy. I’m so proud of myself for all of the work that I did.”

Along with Vann, the Lions obliterated the rest of the field. Three more bowlers placed inside of the top-10 individually: Holly Evans (fifth, 567), Carli Stellwagon (eighth, 559) and Morgan Daniels (10th, 546).

The Lions led by more than 200 pins after their three-game series, then posted the top score in the newly added four-game Baker series — where five bowlers alternate toward one score.

Stellwagon said the Lions rarely practice the Baker format, but it didn’t stop them from scoring above 200 in their first two games. Her goal was to avoid looking at any other team’s score and just focus frame-by-frame.

“It’s intense,” Stellwagon said. “I mean, Baker is so fun but it’s a different environment. It’s loud, it’s energetic, it’s a lot faster moving. But overall, we had a great cushion going in.”

For the FSHS boys, they fed off of each other’s energy. Senior Zach Lockwood bowled a career-best 680 series, opening his final two games with at least six straight strikes. His previous season-high was 576.

From left to right: Free State bowlers Cam Edgecomb, Cameron Edens, Alex Craig, Zach Lockwood, Alex Jimenez, Bayn Schrader and Dmitri Smith stand with the Sunflower League trophy after their first-place finish on Friday at Park Lanes in Shawnee.

After each strike, he would walk back to his team’s table, flash a smile and slap hands with his giddy teammates.

“I think the highest strike streak I’ve gotten before was four, maybe,” said Lockwood, who placed third individually. “I don’t know how to describe it. It was just awesome.”

One lane over from Lockwood was senior Cam Edgecomb, who bowled a season-best 607 series. Senior Cameron Edens placed fifth with a 649 series and senior Alex Jimenez took eighth with a 640.

The Firebirds were second in the team standings following their three-game series, but edged Olathe East by posting the best Baker score.

“I just wouldn’t look at my score,” Edgecomb said. “I would just look straight down after I threw a strike and I’d walk over to the table. It would just help me a lot.”

Lawrence’s boys bowling team was eighth, moving up with a strong Baker series. Junior Hunter Krom had the team’s top three-game series with a 568.
