Free State boys, Lawrence High girls roll

After Free State High senior Alex Jimenez bowled his last ball Monday, he turned around and slapped hands with Lawrence High junior Adonis Stanwix.

During the City Showdown dual at Royal Crest Lanes, Stanwix did his best to keep pace with Jimenez.

But Jimenez, who transferred from Emporia in his sophomore year, was on too much of a roll. He bowled 10 strikes in his final game, finishing with a 265 game and 679 three-game series for the finishing touches on Free State boys bowling team’s 131-pin win on a day that both schools celebrated Senior Day.

Lawrence’s girls bowling team forced a split between the two varsity competitions, earning a 161-pin victory over Free State.

“I told my mom today actually that for every senior night, I get super excited,” said Jimenez, who switched his ball for the final game. “I don’t know why. Today during practice, I was going super fast. I was overthinking. Then once the games started, I was calm, cool and collected. There were a few mistakes, but I can get over that.”

Along with Jimenez, who bowled his second-highest series of the season, Free State senior Alex Craig rolled a 588 series and sophomore Bayn Schrader finished with a 583.

With only two teams, the dual was at a much faster pace than usual tournaments. And both schools enjoyed competing against each other after practicing in lanes next to each other all season.

Stanwix led the LHS boys with a 619 series, including a 227 mark in his final game. Javier Lemmons followed with a 581 series and Noah Goepfert rolled a 572.

“It was fun. We’ve got a lot of senior boys,” Free State coach Burton Gepford said. “They held it together. A lot of pressure for our city dual and overall they did really well.”

Lawrence junior Diamonique Vann led the girls bowling team with a 578 series, though she was edged by Free State freshman Nicole Miele (583) for the individual crown.

Vann bowled above a 187 in each of her three games, picking up a steady amount of spares and avoiding open frames.

“My team we’re pretty good about hitting our spares,” Vann said. “At practice, that’s what (assistant coach) Larry (Burton) gets on to us. He says, ‘Spares are our key,’ so that’s what our main focus is.”

Along with Vann’s strong games, LHS junior Morgan Daniels had a 520 series, senior Hannah Reed bowled a 499 and senior Carli Stellwagon followed with a 496.

“The girls are keeping it together,” Gepford said. “Lawrence High’s had one of the top girls teams for the year and for us to be only 100 pins behind them or so is good.”

“This is local bragging rights, but I don’t know if you noticed, we clap for everybody,” Lawrence coach Paula Bastemeyer added. “Yes, it’s the City Showdown, but we’re all in this together.”

Both schools will compete at the Sunflower League tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Friday at Park Lanes in Shawnee.
