Cyclones topple No. 3 Kansas in overtime

Iowa State, like many teams that have encountered Kansas this season, had trouble stopping senior point guard Frank Mason III, Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.

But Cyclones veterans Monte’ Morris, Deonte Burton and Naz Mitrou-Long shot ISU past the defending Big 12 champions, despite a woeful first half of defense and trailing by as many as 15 points.

The trio combined for 76 points and 16-for-26 3-point shooting to topple the Jayhawks, 92-89, in overtime.

KU’s gutsy 5-foot-10 dynamo, Mason scored a career-best 32 points against the Cyclones (14-8 overall, 6-4 Big 12), and didn’t miss a shot from the floor until his potential game-winner at the end of regulation rimmed out.

ISU kept Mason scoreless for the five minutes of overtime and ended KU’s 54-game home-court winning streak.

Burton nailed seven 3-pointers, and scored 29 points. Morris added 25 points and seven assists. Long put up 25 more points and shot 6-for-11 from 3.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

• The game turned when: Kansas sputtered in overtime.

KU (20-3 overall, 8-2 Big 12) missed its first four shots of the extra period and turned it over twice before Svi Mykhailiuk scored a layup for the Jayhawks’ first field goal of OT. But Iowa State already had built a five-point lead before that.

Baskets from Morris and Burton (his seventh 3) made the difference in the extra period for the visitors, and then Donovan Jackson provided the dagger — a wide-open 3 from the right corner with 0:28 left in OT, putting KU in a four-point hole.

• Offensive highlight: Sophomore Lagerald Vick had his most productive offensive game since Kansas beat ISU, Jan. 16, in Ames, Iowa. And his most memorable two points came via a heads-up play by the 6-foot-5 sophomore wing.

Vick, spotting up on the left wing, zeroed in on a deflected pass headed toward the baseline and capitalized. He met the loose ball on the bounce and drove hard from the left baseline for a high-rising, two-handed jam.

The sophomore sixth man scored another easy — for him at least — two points courtesy of a baseline jam in the second half, when Josh Jackson slung a bounce pass ISU had no chance of stopping as Vick cut backdoor.

After scoring two points combined in his previous two games, Vick finished with eight points off the bench.

• Defensive highlight: With the game tied at 82 and less than 30 seconds to play in regulation, Morris barely missed a floater and Burton was in perfect position for a put-back that would’ve given ISU the lead.

However, Jackson out-jumped the Cyclones’ star big man and knocked the ball against the back board, setting up a rebound for Mykhailiuk and a must-have KU stop.

• Key stat: Turnovers. KU coughed it up 21 times in a rare home setback — just the 10th in Bill Self’s time as head coach.

Iowa State scored 22 points off KU mistakes and the Jayhawks’ untimely miscues kept them from scoring baskets on an afternoon when they shot 50 percent from the floor..

• Up next: The Jayhawks will be back in action in just two days, for a Big Monday Sunflower Showdown in Manhattan, versus rival Kansas State (8 p.m., ESPN).
