Lawrence is the most popular Airbnb destination in Kansas again this year.

The number of guests booking stays on the short-term rental platform in 2017 far surpassed cities such as Wichita, Overland Park and Manhattan, according to a news release from Airbnb.

The number of guests using the service statewide has approximately doubled over last year, and Lawrence’s numbers follow that trend. The number of Lawrence Airbnb guests rose to 8,960 this year as compared with 4,600 last year. Those stays have generated $803,000 in income for hosts in 2017.

By comparison, the number of stays for the second-place city, Wichita, was 7,730 guests. Next is Overland Park with 6,300 guests and Manhattan with only 2,850.

The city of Lawrence is still working on regulations for short-term rentals, which are not currently allowed by city code. Last month, the City Commission indicated it is supportive of regulations that would limit nonowner-occupied short-term rentals, requiring those property owners to follow the same permitting process as bed and breakfast operations.
