After spending eight years as an offensive coordinator at Pittsburg State, Steve Rampy was announced as Lawrence High’s football coach on Friday evening.

Rampy replaces Dirk Wedd, who will retire at the conclusion of the school year. Wedd coached at LHS for 19 seasons, finishing with a 104-87 record.

“Lawrence High School is pleased to announce that Steve Rampy will be the next football coach at LHS,” the school’s athletic director Bill DeWitt wrote on Twitter.

Rampy used a pistol offense at Pitt State, helping the team to an 8-4 record this season by averaging 31.8 points and 392 total yards. He was offensive coordinator when the Gorillas won the NCAA Division II national title in 2011.

Prior to Pitt State, Rampy was the head coach at Blue Valley High for 25 seasons, winning four state championships in eight title game appearances. At Blue Valley, Rampy guided the Tigers to a 176-84 record with nine Eastern Kansas League titles. He was a quarterback at Truman State, earning all-MIAA honors in 1976.

Lawrence finished last season with a 5-5 record, falling in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
