Lions fall to Lee’s Summit West, 5-2

Lawrence High senior runner Alexander Guy puts his hands on his head after he's called out at home plate in the fourth inning against Lee's Summit (Mo.) West on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

After watching Lawrence High’s baseball team commit six errors in a 5-2 loss to Lee’s Summit (Mo.) West on Saturday, coach Brad Stoll chose to look at the positives.

At least all of the errors were correctable and there’s plenty of time left in the season for the Lions to recover.

“I’m encouraged because we started four sophomores tonight and we had a chance in that game,” Stoll said. “Even though we lost three in a row, I’m encouraged with some things that we’re doing. I think we’re going to be all right. I have no worries about that.”

Against a sizable Lee’s Summit West lineup, LHS sophomore left-hander Hank Dobson only allowed one run on three hits in the first four innings, which included four strikeouts on called third strikes.

But in the fifth inning, Dobson couldn’t escape three errors and a RBI single from LSW sophomore Ben Kobel.

“Hank pounded the zone and was effective with his breaking ball,” Stoll said. “Just basically, you gift wrap four runs to a team that talented and athletic, it’s a death sentence. You have to take care of the baseball.”

When Dobson exited, LHS senior reliever Joe Fritschen entered and thrived. Fritschen struck out two batters in the fifth inning without allowing any more runs.

By the end of the night, Fritschen allowed one hit over three innings and one unearned run. He walked the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, but escaped by forcing a double play, which was started by sophomore second baseman Preston Harris.

“My defense helps me out, that’s what it was,” Fritschen said. “They did a good job behind me — came in clutch.”

Harris, in his varsity debut, singled in his first at-bat to center field.

“It’s like (assistant) coach (Adam) Green told him, he deserves it,” Stoll said of Harris. “He grinds out every day. His work ethic is unbelievable. He makes a nice play on a double play. He gets hit in the back. It was a hard-hit ball for his first knock on varsity. Good things happen to good people.”

The Lions (5-8) ended a 14-inning scoreless drought when sophomore Caleb Mondi drew a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, advanced on a single from sophomore Payton Cummins and eventually scored on an error.

But Lawrence stranded seven runners on base and couldn’t capitalize on back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning from Austin Quick and Braden Solko. In the fourth inning, LHS senior Alexander Guy was thrown out at the plate.

The Lions added their final run in the seventh inning when Cummins reached on an infield single and scored on a ground out.
