Firebirds not satisfied after 10-3 win over Memorial

Free State High’s baseball team cruised to a 10-3 home victory against Tulsa (Okla.) Memorial on Friday, but players didn’t spend any time celebrating.

After playing in the Class 6A state championship game during the last two seasons, the Firebirds know the level of baseball required to reach the state’s biggest game.

And they haven’t reached that level in this weekend’s River City Festival.

“There’s a lot of improvements we can do with our at-bats, our approach and just staying solid in the field,” Free State junior outfielder Kyle Abrahamson said.

Abrahamson went 2-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs, drilling a two-run single into the right-center gap in the second inning to score seniors Matt Hill and Daniel Bryant. Abrahamson returned to the field this week after dealing with mononucleosis, which forced him to the bench for a couple of weeks.

His swing isn’t 100 percent where he wants it yet — he hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, driving in Zack Sanders — but he’s just thrilled to be back on the field.

“It’s good to be out there with everyone again instead of watching the game from the dugout,” Abrahamson said. “It feels good to be able to suit up again.”

On the mound against Tulsa Memorial, the Firebirds (8-3) used four pitchers: Peyton Habiger, Sloan Thomsen, Jackson Flynn and Drew Cantell. It’s the first time Thomsen has pitched in a game since 2015 and Flynn sat out all of last season with an arm injury, making only his second appearance of the year.

The four pitchers combined to give up only four hits and zero earned runs. Thomsen struck out two in 2 2/3 innings.

“All four of them got opportunities today,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “It’s tough when you don’t get regular work, there’s no doubt about it. But they understand their job is to go out there, pound the zone and let the defense work. They did some decent things today.”

But then there were the negatives from Free State’s win. There were some defensive lapses (three errors). After scoring six runs in the first two innings, the Firebirds were held to three hits in their final four innings at the plate.

“Obviously you want to win, but for us, it’s about trying to get better,” Mike Hill said. “You only get 20 opportunities so you better take advantage of it.

“Not a very good ballgame on our part. I think we left a lot to be desired in pretty much every facet of the game.”

In the fifth inning, the first four hitters reached base, including an RBI single from Bryant. At the bottom of the order, Bryant and Matt Hill combined for four hits and four runs.

The Firebirds will face Nixa (Mo.) at 11:15 a.m. today at Hoglund Ballpark.
