Free State’s Wiebe sets PR in javelin at Barriers Breakers; Seratte leads LHS

Lawrence High School sophomore runner Evann Seratte competes in the girls' 400 race during the Free State Invitational on Friday at FSHS.

When Free State senior Kahler Wiebe felt her arm reach back during her first javelin toss Friday, she thought it was just going to be another regular throw.

But once Wiebe ran to see where it stuck in the ground and heard the measurement, she was thrilled with the result — “Oh shoot, this is it!” she said.

Wiebe set a new personal-record (122 feet, seven inches) at Free State’s Barrier Breakers meet, crushing her old best mark — set about two years ago — by more than six feet.

“I really have no clue what made it happen,” Wiebe said. “I think when I have a fresh start, because it was my first throw of the day, when I’m not thinking about it and just kind of going out and throwing it, it all clicks together and works out.”

Free State senior javelin thrower Kahler Wiebe throws during her event at the Free State Invitational on Friday at FSHS.

Wiebe, who took first Friday, didn’t match her personal-record last season, which she called, “kind of a dull year for me.”

After her personal-best toss, Wiebe had another throw of 119 feet, which she hopes is a good sign for the remainder of the year.

“Usually at the beginning of the season, it seems like really clumsy for me to get my steps back,” Wiebe said. “This year has just been put together and flowing really well. It just happened and I’m excited.”

Wiebe highlighted a strong throwing day for the Firebirds. Senior Caylee Irving was runner-up in the discus and shot put, including a personal-record 114-foot mark in the discus. Tyler Winsor was third in the boys javelin.

On the track, senior Emily Venters, signed to run at Boise State, won in the 1,600 meters (5:05.66) and was runner-up in the 800. FSHS junior Avant Edwards won the boys 1,600 race, and the Firebirds won the 4×100 relay.

Cameryn Thomas added a second-place finish in the long jump and Auna Childress was third in the triple jump.

Seratte leads Lions

Lawrence High sophomore Evann Seratte has only raced twice in the 800 meters in her career, but she looked like a veteran with a strong kick on the final stretch.

Seratte won the 800 in 2:22.28, edging Free State’s Venters. Seratte added wins in the 400 meters (1:00.98) and 4×400 relay alongside Asjah Harris, Hannah Stewart and Myah Yoder.

“I was just proud of how I handled it,” Seratte said of her 800 race.

Seratte, a starter on the girls soccer team, was about three seconds behind her personal-best in the 400. She has her eyes set on breaking her best mark, and eventually the school record, which is set at 54 seconds.

“Probably not this year,” Seratte said of the school record in the 400, “but maybe sometime in the future I’ll be able to get that.”

The LHS boys track and field team had the top three placers in the long jump, including winner Dante Jackson (21 feet, 0.75 inches). James Reeder won in the 110 hurdles and Hunter Krom was champion in the javelin.
