Annual Scouting for Food Drive among most successful in 30-year history

Douglas County Scouting groups stocked the shelves of local food pantries with 10,611 food items during the 30th annual Scouting for Food Drive from April 3 through April 8.

John Scott, of Eudora, can put that number in perspective as the 13-year coordinator of the Douglas County Scouting for Food Drive and leader of the Eudora effort since the drive started in 1988.

“This is the fourth best drive in our 30 years,” he said. “It was a very good year.”

Ten Lawrence Cub Scout packs, seven Boy Scout troops, and three co-ed Girl and Boy scout Venture Crews collected 6,254 food items during the drive. The food will be distributed to the food pantries offered by The Salvation Army of Douglas County, East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation, Catholic Charities, Heartland Health, Trinity Episcopal Church and Willow Domestic Violence Shelter.

Eudora Cub, Girl and Boy scouts, with the help of the Boy Scout Troop 64 alumni and the Eudora 4-H Club, Eudora High School Honor Society and the Eudora United Methodist Church Youth Group collected 3,682 food items for the community food pantry at Eudora’s St. Paul Church of Christ.

Baldwin City Cub and Boy scouts and members of the city’s Venture Crew collected 1,675 from the community food pantry at Baldwin First United Methodist Church.
