LHS soccer game suspended after slipping into two-goal deficit

Nearly 30 minutes into Tuesday’s match against Olathe Northwest, Lawrence High’s girls soccer team couldn’t beat the weather.

The Lions trailed, 2-0, with 12:51 remaining in the first half when the contest was suspended because of rain and lightning.

Both schools will pick up where they left off when the match is resumed on April 17th at LHS.

The Ravens (1-2, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A) scored in the fifth minute when sophomore Mia Haake drilled a shot from outside of the 18-yard box — the first shot of the contest — to the left corner of the net.

With 13 minutes remaining in the first half, ONW freshman Malia Shinkle scored on a shot from the top of the box that deflected off of a defender and barely escaped the diving reach of LHS senior goaltender Olivia Lemus.

Shinkle’s goal was about a minute after the Lions’ best offensive opportunity. Senior Skylar Drum snuck a throughball to sophomore Anna Chieu along the left sideline. Chieu shuffled around a defender and took an open shot at the top of the box, but couldn’t sneak it past ONW’s goalkeeper.

With the Ravens controlling possession, Lemus made three saves and received help from LHS defenders Katelyn McIntire, Banner Williams, Leslie Ostronic and Taeghan Sharpe.

The Lions (0-2) will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest at 7 p.m. Thursday.
