Lions scratching potential for passing game

After completing 10 passes for 186 yards last week, Lawrence High’s football team showed its potential in the no-huddle offense.

When the Lions are completing passes, it only opens up the run game and allows them to push the tempo.

The result is a quick-scoring offense that is difficult to stop. The Lions hope to continue their momentum when they travel to Olathe North at 7 p.m. today at Olathe District Activity Complex.

LHS junior quarterback Dante’ Jackson was new to the position when he went behind center during the summer, but has proven to be a quick learner.

“Each hurdle that he’s approached, he’s figured it out,” LHS coach Dirk Wedd said of Jackson. “Friday nights are totally different also because it’s so much faster and everything. Each game he’s learned and gotten better. I don’t know, I put high expectation on him, otherwise I wouldn’t have moved him. But again, he’s really done a great job of doing so much.”

But Jackson is happy to have a strong group of receivers to help his development. With juniors Jalen Dudley, Harrison King and Ekow Boye-Doe, and sophomores Clarence King and Caleb Mondi, Jackson said he knows all of them can jump up and make athletic plays.

“I’ve played with all of them since I was a little kid so just having that bond, it always helps,” Jackson said. “But we’ve always had that bond. Even the guys I haven’t known since I was a little kid, we’re all just family around here.”

Dudley added: “Outside of football, we all pretty much hang out a lot. We’re always out together and pretty close friends.”

Boye-Doe had five receptions for 79 yards last week and Dudley added three catches for 56 yards. Both of them scored the first touchdowns of their varsity career.

But even with the success in the pass game, Wedd said it’s only the beginning of what their offense can accomplish throughout the season.

“They’ve come a long ways too,” Wedd said. “It’s exciting to see where we’re at. We haven’t really even scratched the surface yet for how good we can be because they are all really, really talented kids.”
