Volunteer opportunities: Collect donations at Late Night in the Phog

As is tradition at Late Night in the Phog, fans are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items, which Kansas Athletics will donate to Just Food. Volunteers are needed to assist with the collection of nonperishable food items at the entrance to Allen Fieldhouse. Volunteers are also needed to assist with collecting cash donations outside Allen Fieldhouse for those fans not able to bring a food item. Late Night will start with a with an outdoor pre-festival from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to collect donations throughout the event. Douglas County Senior Services and the City of Lawrence need your help. The Safe Winter Walkways program needs volunteers to help elderly and disabled individuals clear public sidewalks after snowfall. Able-bodied Lawrence residents with a passion for helping others and an enjoyment of winter weather are needed to volunteer to create safer and more accessible pedestrian walkways by shoveling snow through the winter months. Board members needed

The Sunrise Project helps to empower people to live healthy, self-determined lives through engagement with food and the environment to build a socially just community. Help with mailings

The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for residents by focusing on improvements in health, education and financial stability. The United Way is looking for a small group of volunteers to assist with several large mailings. Tasks include collating publications and stuffing envelopes. Lead a cooking class

Are you interested in helping others learn about healthy eating and cooking? Team up with one of United Way’s AmeriCorps members to lead a Harvesters Project Strength class which assists adults in creating healthy meals with limited resources. Become a co-facilitator by attending a “train the trainers” session at Harvesters on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13, or partner with us as an assistant during an eight-week class ­– no training required. Each session covers the basics of food safety, nutrition and hands-on cooking. Harvesters provides the food, educational materials and the equipment for cooking. Civics education

Kids Voting of Douglas County is dedicated to educating youth in grades K-12 about the rights, responsibilities and mechanics of participating in an election by providing students an authentic voting experience at voting stations throughout Douglas County. Volunteers are needed to staff voting stations during the afternoon on Election Day, Nov. 8. Volunteers will assist students with placing their ballot and return ballot boxes to the Kids Voting headquarters at the Riverfront Office Complex, located at the intersection of Sixth and New Hampshire streets. Various shifts and locations are available. Two volunteer training sessions will be provided on Nov. 3 at the Kids Voting office, one at 4:30 p.m. and the other at 5:30 p.m. For more information about Kids Voting, please contact Ruthi Rapp at rapp3144@sunflower.com.
