KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A twenty-nine-year-old man was charged Monday in a shooting that injured seven people in Kansas City’s Westport entertainment district.

Kelvin Clark, of Kansas City, Kan., faces seven counts each of assault and armed criminal action. His bond is set at $250,000. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

The gunfire erupted around 3 a.m. Sunday after a vehicle knocked a man to the ground, a police detective wrote in the probable cause statement. The man said that after being hit, he began running and was shot in the thigh.

Surveillance video from after the collision shows two people inside of the vehicle shooting in the direction of the man and a crowd where the other victims were standing, the probable cause statement said.

Police said in a news release that the suspects’ vehicle then drove at responding officers before crashing. The release said an officer fired at the suspects’ vehicle during the melee, but no one was struck by the police gunfire.

Clark was arrested in the area and told arresting officers, “I don’t know what’s going on. I was the passenger in a wreck and then I ran.” He said he was too intoxicated to remember who else was in the vehicle, the probable cause statement said.

A woman inside the wrecked vehicle also was taken into custody. She said only that she was in a vehicle with two men and ducked down when the gunfire started, the probable cause statement said.

Police said the most seriously wounded victim initially was in critical condition, with the other victims in stable condition.

The status of the other people in the vehicle with Clark wasn’t immediately known. Michael Mansur, a spokesman for the Jackson County prosecutor’s office, said only that the case remains under investigation.
