FSHS volleyball posts 2-2 record at LSW

? Facing some of the top teams across the state, Free State High’s volleyball team posted a 2-2 record at the Lee’s Summit (Mo.) West tournament on Saturday.

In pool play, the Firebirds lost to Blue Springs South (25-21, 25-21) and beat Bishop Miege (21-25, 25-12, 25-17) and St. Thomas Aquinas (27-25, 25-21). Miege is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A-I in the Kansas Volleyball Coaches poll, and Aquinas is No. 1 in 5A.

Advancing to the winner’s bracket after pool play, the Firebirds (6-3) lost to Olathe Northwest (No. 6 in 6A), 25-19, 25-22.

Naomi Hickman led Free State with 20 kills and 11 blocks, while Rachel Hickman had 17 kills and seven blocks and Cameryn Thomas and Kaitlyn Hamilton both had 14 kills. Defensively, Erin Cushing had 30 digs, Thomas recorded 29 and Murphy O’Malley had 20. Mya Gleason had a team-best 54 assists.

The Firebirds, ranked No. 9 in 6A, will play in the Lawrence High triangular at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
