Area football roundup: Tonganoxie wins OT thriller

TONGANOXIE — Tonganoxie High’s football players erased a 16-point first half deficit in their final regular-season home game, beating previously unbeaten Atchison in a 22-16 overtime thriller on Senior Night.

Senior running back Jordan Brown paved the way for the comeback with 149-yard performance on 35 carries. The first of his two scores on the night came on the opening drive of the second half, when Brown plunged it in from six yards out and notched the two-point conversion to halve the deficit.

Brown capped the night with a two-yard score in overtime. The defense then stiffened, keeping the Redmen out of the end zone on four tries in the extra period.

In fact, the defense had a strong effort in the team’s second overtime win of the season.

After surrendering a 60-yard touchdown run to Dylon Leblue on the first play of scrimmage, THS did now allow another offensive touchdown the rest of the game. Senior linebacker Devan Graham even logged a crucial block on a third quarter field goal attempt by Atchison.

The Chieftains (5-2) will close out the regular season with consecutive road games. Tonganoxie will travel to Kansas City (Kan.) Piper at 7 p.m. next week.
