Lawrence Police Department to use extra officers to look for impaired drivers over Thanksgiving holiday

With the exception of New Years, police say Thanksgiving has the highest number of car crashes involving an impaired driver.

This year, additional officers will be assigned to look for drunk and impaired drivers over the Thanksgiving period, the Lawrence Police Department said in a release.

The extra patrol hours will be paid for by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation, the release said. Additional officers will be assigned to look for signs of impairment in drivers between Monday and Nov. 27.

The police department does not disclose the location of the patrols.

Officers will also be ticketing vehicle occupants who are not wearing seat belts or whose children are not properly restrained.
