Lawrence teen accused of killing grandmother to face battery charges after murder trial

Two battery cases filed in juvenile court against a Lawrence teen will be pursued after the conclusion of a murder trial for the teen, who is accused of killing his grandmother, a judge decided Wednesday.

The teen, Jaered Long, 17, faces a single felony charge of first-degree murder in adult court and two felony battery charges in juvenile court.

On Wednesday afternoon Long’s attorney, Branden Smith, appeared in court for a scheduling hearing. Originally, trial dates were to be set for Long’s two battery charges; however, Smith requested the hearing be postponed until the murder trial was finished.

Douglas County District Court Judge James George granted Smith’s request and set a new scheduling hearing for the two cases for March 15 at 1 p.m.

Long was arrested in late December after police found his 67-year-old grandmother, Deborah Bretthauer, stabbed to death in her apartment.

Long was 16 at the time and lived in the apartment at 1200 George Court with Bretthauer.

On Oct. 31 Douglas County District Court Judge Kay Huff granted the prosecution’s motion — filed in March — to try Long as an adult.

Since his arrest in December, Long has been accused of attacking three Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center corrections officers. Felony battery charges were filed against him in two of the cases, and Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said his office plans to file the third felony charge at some point.

Long’s murder trial is scheduled to begin in February 2017. Branson said in early November that the outcome of that trial would impact the battery charges.

Long is currently an inmate in the Douglas County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
