Election 2016 Update: Douglas County turnout tops 50 percent before evening post-work rush

Voters at Kanwaka Township Hall, Douglas County Precinct No. 56, fill the hall shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

More than half of Douglas County voters have cast ballots before the evening post-work rush, according to the latest update from the Douglas County Clerk’s office.

A 3 p.m. Tuesday update from Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew reports 43,124 ballots are in the box. That accounts for 52.8 percent of the county’s registered voters. Advance ballots accounted for 22,819 of that total and 20,395 have voted Tuesday at the county’s 60 polling sites.

The latest update indicates 11,274 county residents voted since the 11 a.m. update from the Clerk’s Office.

Precinct supervisors were reporting “steady” activity, Shew said at 1:30 p.m. The 11 a.m. indicated 2,886 county residents voted during the first four hours the polls were open. That dipped slightly to 2,816 in the four hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The busiest county polling site has been the Lumberyard Arts Center of northwest and south Baldwin City precincts 62 and 63. As of 3 p.m. 710 had voted there Tuesday. With the 705 advance ballots cast in those precincts, 54.15 of the registered voters in those precincts have voted.

Precinct 19 voting at Brandon Woods in Lawrence had the largest turnout percentage as of 3 p.m. with 69.86 percent of its 1,324 registered voters having voted.

Precinct 10 on the University of Kansas campus had the lowest turnout as of 3 p.m. with a turnout of 19.32 percent of its 947 registered voters. It was the only polling place with a 3 p.m. turnout of less than 25 percent.
