Baldwin High track seniors finish in familiar spot — on top at state

? Baldwin High senior Addie Dick could not have imagined a better way to end her four years on the Bulldog track and field team.

The Baldwin High senior helped the Bulldog 4×800 relay to a first-place finish for the third straight year, as BHS went on to win a fourth consecutive Class 4A title.

Fellow senior Fayth Peterson joined Dick on the 4×800 relay, and also ran on the Bulldogs’ first-place 4×400 team. Dick said that being able to celebrate with Peterson was a special way to end their careers.

“For Fayth Peterson and I, it’s our third state championship in a row for the 4×8, so we were super pumped to get it again,” Dick said.

Kelsey Kehl led the Bulldogs in the field events again on Saturday. Kehl won the discus Friday, and returned to take first in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 160 feet, 8 inches. Kehl also was the runner-up in the shot put.

“It feels really good,” Kehl said. “Everything I have worked for has come to this. It’s very rewarding.”

The Bulldogs won the meet with 95.5 points to beat out Andale.

De Soto’s Hodge sets two Class 4A meet records

De Soto High senior Travis Hodge went out in style as he led the Wildcats to a third-place team finish in the Class 4A boys standings.

Hodge broke Class 4A meet record in 800 and 1600 with respective times of 1:53.06 and 4:16.34.

“I dreamed of it last year because the 4:18 mile record here and the 1:53-high 800 record here is also my two school records,” Hodge, a Kansas State University signee said. “They were like decimals off.”

The 20 points that Hodge racked up with the two victories helped the Wildcats finish with 34 total to make the podium.

Strawn leads Wellsville

Wellsville senior Zach Strawn was a man on a mission Saturday going into the 400-meter dash. Strawn was a hair away from winning the state title last year, and he made amends for it by claiming the event championship with a time of 49.07.

“I wanted to become a state champion because of what happened last year,” Strawn said. I lost by .02 seconds to a good friend of mine now at St. Mary’s (Louie Johnson) who couldn’t make it this year. I got what I actually came here to do.”

Strawn also took third in the 100-meter dash to lead Wellsville to a 12th-place finish with 20.5 points.

Oskaloosa’s Dillion Grother joined Strawn in being a Class 3A event champion after winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.87.

McLouth’s Anna Moore highlighted the Class 2A meet for the area schools by finishing third in the 100 hurdles, as she clocked in at 15.87.
