SM East beats Free State in 9 innings for 6A crown

Shawnee Mission East defeated Free State High, 4-3, in extra innings for Class 6A’s state baseball championship Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

The defending state champs, who also fell to fellow Sunflower League program SME in the regular season, tied the title game at 1 in the top of the third, and at 3 in the top of the sixth.

From that point forward, neither team could plate a run until the bottom of the ninth, when Lancers freshman pinch runner Phillip Cole scored from second base on Free State’s first error of the day — a throw from second baseman Mikey Corbett dropped at first base.

Unlike in a two-hit semifinal victory earlier in the morning, FSHS found some traditional offense here and there to keep up with the Lancers (21-4).

The Firebirds’ Parker Tietjen (two hits), Kyle Abrahamson, Zion Bowlin and Nathan Strathman accounted for the second-place team’s five hits to close an outstanding season (20-5).
