Following an opening round that saw two Jayhawks in the top 20 at one point, the Kansas University men’s golf team stands in 10th place of the NCAA regionals, after shooting a 308 on Monday. With 36 holes left to play, Georgia leads the 13-team field by three strokes, shooting a 284 at Ol’ Colony Golf Course.

“It wasn’t a very good start to the regional,” Kansas coach Jamie Bermel said. “Our guys just didn’t play well, and it’s certainly disappointing. We just couldn’t get many putts to fall, and guys started pressing a little.”

Leading the way for the Jayhawks is senior Connor Peck, who continued his steady play this season. Though he is currently tied for 26th, Peck’s 74 is just six strokes behind individual leaders Jeremy Paul of Colorado and Greyson Sigg and Zach Healy of Georgia, who lead the field by one stroke.

Behind Peck on the Kansas leaderboard is senior Ben Welle. With his 75 in the opening round, Welle is tied for 32nd.

Other Kansas scores: Daniel Hudson, 79, tied for 54th; Chase Hanna, 80, tied for 58th; and Charlie Hillier, 81, tied for 66th.

South Carolina and Kentucky trail Georgia in the team standings.

The top five teams and top six individuals not on one of those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
