U.S. Highway 24 closed following motorcyle accident

U.S. Highway 24 was closed Saturday night following a three-vehicle accident involving two motorcycles.

Shortly after 9 p.m., Jefferson County emergency responders and the Kansas Highway Patrol were dispatched to the accident, about three and a half miles west of the Douglas County line in Jefferson County, according to Jeremy Rodecap, fire chief of Jefferson County Fire District No. 3. He said the motorcycles were traveling left of the center line of the highway when the accident occurred.

One patient was flown by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Rodecap said in a press release. Another patient was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance with nonlife-threatening injuries.

As of 11:20 p.m. Saturday, the highway was still closed. The KHP is investigating the accident.
