From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 5, 1916:

  • “Raymond A. Kent, a young educator who has had much experience in the schools of Minnesota and who has completed a technical training remarkable in its thoroughness, will head the Lawrence city schools next year. His appointment was made by the Lawrence board of education at a special meeting held last night. Mr. Kent will succeed Supt. F. P. Smith, who will complete twenty-two years’ service in the Lawrence schools in August…. Mr. Kent was engaged under the dual agreement entered into by the board of education and the University of Kansas authorities. He will receive the full salary of $2,500 from the board of education, $1,000 additional from the University of Kansas in return for lectures before the students of the board of education, and $500 additional for lectures in the summer session…. Endorsements from leading educational authorities of the United States are in possession of the board of education, commending the attainments and ability of the new superintendent. Mr. Kent is 32 years old.”
  • “District court took a recess at the close of the day’s business yesterday…. Noble Turner was convicted of burglary and larceny. He was adjudged guilty by the jury of stealing supplies from a garage. Turner was tried at the last term of court on a charge of stealing skunk hides and was acquitted by the jury of that charge. C. R. Thompson, alias Jack Goodwin, was convicted of stealing chickens. Thompson is the man who introduced a new note into chicken stealing some weeks ago by arranging with local dealers for the purchase of his chickens before he went and got them. To the dealers he represented himself as a chicken buyer, and had a wagon fitted up with wire netting to carry out the idea.”
  • “The Ornithology club of the University will spend Saturday morning on the Wakarusa. All persons interested in the study of birds are invited to accompany the party, whether members of the club or not. The party will take the Santa Fe train heading for Sibleyville at 8:25 o’clock tomorrow morning.”
  • “The May Fete of the city schools will be held on McCook field Thursday, May 11. The date was definitely decided yesterday. The school children have been working hard under the athletic directors to make the day a success. There will be games of different kinds, drills by the different classes and track competition among the schools and grades.”
