Wakarusa River Bridge south of Lawrence to close Monday

A bridge over the Wakarusa River on County Road 1055 just south of Lawrence will close Monday so that repairs started last year can be completed. Douglas County Public Works officials expect the bridge about 1.25 miles south of 31st Street to remain closed until May 6.

The bridge was closed from September through December last year to rehabilitate the structure’s deck concrete, replace girder bearings on its abutments and relocate the wall of the south abutment. Although not finished, that work was sufficient to allow the bridge on the popular route between Lawrence and Baldwin City to reopen through the winter and early spring. The project’s contractor, King Construction, will now return to complete the unfinished work.
