100 years ago: ‘Practice’ coal mine to be sunk on KU campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 28, 1916:

  • “A coal mine will be sunk on Mount Oread, it was announced this morning by A. C. Terrill, professor of mining. The securing of coal will be secondary, the chief object being to furnish actual practice for the students of mining, Prof. Terrill said. Beneath the strata of Oread limestone, not very far below the ground surface, there is a four-inch vein of coal, which will be reached first. Then down about 160 feet, Prof. E. Haworth of the department of geology thinks, there is another vein, which may be reached later. Before announcing that a coal mine would be built for instructional purposes, Prof. Terrill secured the permission of the board of administration.”
  • “The city commissioners issued a statement today of what they propose to do in the way of improving the water plant after the city takes it over, if the authorization of bonds for improvements is voted at the city election a week from today. The statement was made in response to a request for definite information on the plans of improvement…. It will require in the vicinity of $11,000 for the enlargement and extension of the system of wells or water supply. It will require approximately $89,000 for the construction of an iron removal and softening plant, for new pumps and the enlargement of pump house, and for the complete protection from floods. Further there should be expended from $75,000 to $100,000 for the extension of the mains and additional valves and fire hydrants…. The water supply will be adequate to provide for all possible needs in any drought for years to come. The wells and the entire plant will be so constructed that there will be no danger of overflow from any flood.”
  • “Justice Henry F. Mason of the Kansas supreme court and James A. Troutman, state senator from Shawnee county and newly appointed member of the state bar examining board, will be the out of town speakers at the annual law school banquet which will be held next Tuesday night at the Eldridge hotel on the event of the seventy-fourth birthday of ‘Uncle Jimmie’ Green, dean of the law school. It will be the twelfth annual celebration for the law students. The festivities will be continued the next day by an improvised holiday. Because of a ruling of the University senate last year prohibiting holidays by the different schools of the University, the ‘laws’ will take the responsibility themselves of cutting classes on Wednesday in order that ‘Uncle Jimmie’ day be observed properly.”
  • “An event of great interest, a ‘Get together’ supper, will be enjoyed by the entire membership of the First Christian church and many of their friends in the new basement of the church on Friday evening at 7:00 o’clock. Many notable features of unusual interest to the work of the church will be included in the program in addition to ‘eats’ and music. There will be no charge for the fine supper prepared.”
  • “There will be a good road meeting tonight in the Brackett school house. The school house is located three miles west of Lawrence on the California road. All the Lawrence people who are interested in good roads are invited to attend the meeting. The meeting will commence at 8 o’clock.”
