Lawrence residents wake to white Easter; weather to change this afternoon
Douglas County residents woke to a white Easter as close to two inches of snow fell in parts of the county.
Emily Heller, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said the NWS was getting unofficial reports of two inches of snow in Lawrence as of 9:30 a.m. The snow started falling two to three hours earlier and would move out of the area by 10 a.m., she said.
Topeka officially had 1.4 inches of snow, which was nearly half the three inches recorded during the mild winter, Heller said.
There were a number of minor accidents on area highways, but Douglas County Emergency Communications reported there were no serious incidents.
The bad road conditions and snow won’t last long. Heller said skies would clear by afternoon and temperatures would reach the low 50s. The next chance for needed moisture would be Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning with a system that could also bring a chance for severe thunderstorms, Heller said.
