100 years ago: High school basketball tournament under way in KU’s Robinson Gym

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 19, 1916:

  • “The Lawrence high school team won its first game in the ninth annual Interscholastic Basketball Tournament which opened today in Robinson gymnasium, by defeating Lyndon 16 to 7. The tournament opened at 10 o’clock this morning before a crowd of 500 high school and University students…. The girls’ games were played in the small girls’ gym behind closed doors and covered windows. It was announced that absolutely no men were admitted to these games under the order given early this week by the management of the tournament. However, there was a well substantiated rumor that several high school principals acting as managers for co-ed teams, saw the contests this morning.”
  • “If there are any Lawrence merchants who would like to have new curbs put in in front of their places of business along Massachusetts street while the new white way is under construction, they are asked to inform City Engineer Dunmire. Two or three property owners have made the request for the improvement, which will be put in at the expense of the property owner, the city undertaking to do the work at cost. While the edges of the sidewalks are torn up in the construction of the white way, there is a good opportunity for making any repairs that may be needed, and some of the property owners have been glad to avail themselves of the opportunity to have the city take charge of the work of replacing old curbings with new. After the concrete is poured into place over the cables will of course be too late to think of repairing the curbing.”
  • “The city of Lawrence may be able to take over and begin operation of the municipal water plant about June 1, according to an estimate made by Receiver J. H. Mitchell this morning. Mr. Mitchell said that unless some unforeseen complication arose, not much more than sixty days should be required to comply with the necessary formalities that will precede city management…. All of these proceedings constitute a considerable job for the city and the water company, but in Mr. Mitchell’s opinion there should be no delay in executing them.”
  • “In order that the people of Kansas might know that Lawrence was going to have better water, the Journal-World sent a marked copy of its issue for Wednesday, March 15th, to about two hundred and fifty towns in Kansas, addressing them to the Secretary of the Commercial Club. Many of the towns may not have organizations of that character, but the papers will fall into good hands anyway.”
  • “The Civic League, which has interested school children in a gardening campaign this year, has arranged to offer prizes for the best gardens raised by school children entered in the contest. These will be the prizes: For the best flower and vegetable garden, $5. For the second best garden, $3. For the third best garden, $2. Children who wish to enter in the gardening contest must register at the city hall in order to be eligible to compete. The Civic League members hope a large number of school children of the town may be induced to enter the gardening competition.”
