Free State’s Piper repeats as league POY

For the second straight season, Free State High junior Madison Piper was named the Sunflower League’s girls basketball Player of the Year, announced Sunday.

Piper, the school’s all-time leading scorer, led the Firebirds with 18.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

For the boys, Free State senior Hunter Gudde and Lawrence High senior Justin Roberts were chosen for the first team. LHS senior Price Morgan was selected on the second team.

Lawrence senior Anthony Harvey Jr. and junior Jackson Mallory, along with Free State seniors Kristian Rawls and Chrision Wilburn, received honorable mentions, and LHS freshman Noah Butler split the league’s Freshman of the Year honors with Olathe Northwest’s Dominic Messina.

LHS sophomore E’lease Stafford joined Piper on the girls all-league first team, and freshman Chisom Ajekwu was picked for the third team.

Free State senior Hannah Walter and sophomore Cameryn Thomas, along with LHS juniors Skylar Drum and Olivia Lemus, were given honorable mentions.
