Douglas County Emergency Management, National Weather Service to host severe weather class

Following Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week, Douglas County Emergency Management will host a class on regional weather.

Monday night at the Lawrence Arts Center officials from the National Weather Service in Topeka will teach safety options and preparedness tips, said Emergency Management planner David Hogg.

“We really want it to be something that everybody in the community can come to and get something out of, not just the really, really intense weather folks,” Hogg said. “It’s really for anybody that would like to know more about the weather that impacts us in Lawrence, in Douglas County or Northeast Kansas.”

The class, called Weather 101, will be Monday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St. The event is free and open to the public.

The class will also teach residents about local weather warning systems and how to keep up with any forecast updates or warnings, Hogg said.

“We’ll actually be selling weather radios at the event and have volunteers there to program them,” he said. “Or people who have one that’s not working or needs to be re-programmed can come and we’ll set it up for them too.”
